Selena Gomez Learns From Ethan Hawke on ‘Getaway,’ Gets Into Producing

Her co-star, busy studying Shakespeare, insisted he didn’t have anything to teach the 21-year-old singer/actress.
"I loved actually being able to hear Ethan talk about things he had gone through because obviously he’s been doing this for a while. So, when we’d go to dinner or he would tell a quick story, I loved seeing how he’d react to what he had gone through or how he had handled it," Gomez said. "I obviously learned a lot and was very doey-eyed. It was fun."
Hawke insisted that he didn’t have anything to teach the 21-year-old singer/actress, something that she quickly protested.
But it seems she’s already taken his advice about not confining herself to one area of the entertainment industry.
In addition to her successful music and acting career, Gomez also has her own production company, which she launched a few years ago with her mother.
Although she doesn’t often talk about it, her July Moon Productions banner, which she runs with her mom, is “going very well,” she told THR.
"My mom and I actually sold our first project, which is exciting. It’s fun to be able to kind of do things from scratch," she said. "My mom would read a couple of books and she’d send them my way and then we’d figure out how to get the rights to them and then we’d get to pitch our own things…It’s really an opportunity to make what we want to make and it’s very rare to do."
Meanwhile, Hawke is preparing to play Macbeth at Lincoln Center this fall, something he’s spent the summer studying.
"Unfortunately, these British punks, they grow up on this stuff," he said. "So, I’m trying to do America proud. Stand up and do some American Shakespeare."

Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke on the sad Shelby Super Snake of ‘Getaway’

Selena Gomez is “not the best driver.”  So said the actress when we sat down with her and co-star Ethan Hawke to discuss their new movie, “Getaway.” The action-thriller takes place almost entirely in a car, but Gomez didn’t even have to pretend to be a good driver for her role as The Kid, it’s Hawke’s character, Brent Magna, who is behind the wheel the whole time.

Gomez and Hawke aren’t the only stars of the film, the Shelby GT500 Super Snake is featured nearly as much as the living members of the cast (which also includes Jon Voight), maybe more. Because it is on screen so much, audience members might grow attached to the vehicle, however Hawke told us that neither he nor Gomez were able to grow close to the Super Snake as in reality more than one car was used.

Lest you think us slightly odd for anthropomorphizing the vehicle, Hawke also said that watching the movie later he did get a sense that sometimes “the car looks sad.” If cars had feelings, this one being sad would be completely natural as the poor thing gets beaten up pretty badly.

As you might expect, a movie that is a big long car chase features a whole lot of stunts. Neither Gomez nor Hawke seemed to have been scared for themselves, they were, however, a little worried for the stuntmen. This lack of fear wasn’t false bravado, some of it was definitely due to their not being on set for every stunt. Said Gomez, “Luckily we weren’t there for a lot of the flipping and things, cause that would have definitely scared me.”

You will have to see for yourself if you get scared for the car or the people in it. Directed by Courtney Solomon, “Getaway” races into theaters August 30th.
"What’s fun about this movie is that in any given take, there were 12 cameras mounted on this car to get all these crazy angles, and it’s something I’ve never done before. … It’s a hard balance inside any action movie, to try to bring any authenticity of emotion and human behavior to these outlandish circumstances. One thing I enjoyed about the simplicity of being stuck in this car, it let Selena and I have fun."
— Ethan Hawke when he was asked, Getaway” explores a more intimate setting by trapping your character in a car. Did it put pressure on you to convey more emotion?”
